Wine judging and animal scoring competitions for young Europeans: 2 judging competitions of the Concours Général Agricole open to young Europeans. 91 participants from 28 participating countries in 2024. How many will take part in 2025?

During SIA 2024, 91 young Europeans put their knowledge and skills to the test, taking part into the Young Cattle Judging Competition (CJAJ) and the Young Wine Professionals Competition (CJPV) on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Every year, for three days, the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty (DGER-BRECI), with the help of European and international agricultural education network coordinators, organizes the visit to Paris of around a hundred candidates and their accompanying adults, from European partner establishments.

The CJAJ (Concours de Jugement des Animaux par les Jeunes) consists in evaluating the morphological characteristics of several dairy and beef cow breeds (Montbéliarde, Prim’Holstein, Brune, Blonde d’Aquitaine and Limousine), depending on the options chosen by the candidates. The competition is based on the presentation of cattle by breeders in the center of the cattle presentation ring, which serves as a reference for « pointing out » the animal’s characteristics.

Relive the cattle judging competition by breed alongside the young Europeans at SIA2024 – Trophy for the best pointer in the Show Ring

The Concours des Jeunes Professionnels du Vin (CJPV) takes place away from the hustle and bustle of the show, in the heart of the Concours Général Agricole pavilion. The first characterization test involves recognition of 5 samples: grape variety, vintage, production region, appellation and price segmentation. The second test is similar to a sensory analysis. It involves rating the organoleptic characteristics of 5 wines on a structured scale from 1 to 5. At the end of these 2 tests, the 3 best candidates take part in a final commented tasting of a mystery wine to determine the final podium.

Young people from French agricultural schools are also competing in these 2 competitions. The tests and wine samples are the same for all French and European candidates, but the results are split into two sections: a French section and a European section.

Winners of the 2024 edition

At the end of the day’s events, three winners from each of the 28 European delegations received their prizes, in the presence of all the professional and institutional representatives involved in the event: the competition juries, the General Agricultural Commissioner and his team, representatives from the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty (BRECI-DGER) and the Erasmus + Agency.

European evening

Alongside the competitions, the 137 guests from 28 European countries gathered for a festive evening, during which each team shared culinary specialities from their country and enjoyed a buffet offering products from a dozen of French agricultural schools.

Erasmus + France partners European competitions

This year, 30% of European candidates were able to finance their mobility through the Erasmus action « KA121-VET – Participation in VET skills competitions », reserved for mobility projects for trade competitions at accredited establishments for learners and staff in vocational education and training.

As a partner of these European competitions and represented at the highest level during the festivities (European evening and prize-giving ceremony), Erasmus+ France contributes to the recognition of the skills of these young professionals by endorsing, in collaboration with MASA, the open-badges (digital certificates of participation) awarded at the end of the competitions.

28 European countries and more in 2024

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom (Scotland).

As in 2023, a courageous Ukrainian delegation did us the honor of taking part in the European youth competitions at the Salon International de l’Agriculture, despite the war situation and a grueling 44-hour bus journey. The delegation comprised 4 students and a professor of oenology from the Universities of Kyiv and Bila Tserkva.

Le TIEA (Trophée International de l’Enseignement Agricole), est une des rares compétitions maintenues en 2021 par le Concours Général Agricole suite au report du Salon International de l’Agriculture en 2022. Dans cette édition si particulière, en « distanciel » , l’Argentine s’impose devant la Chine et la Belgique dans la section « établissements étrangers ».

Ce trophée historique, précédemment connu sous le nom de Trophée National des Lycées Agricoles (TNLA), a fêté son 20ème anniversaire en 2021. Les organisateurs ont prévu de changer son nom et d’adapter certaines épreuves pour lui donner une résonance plus internationale.

Malheureusement, la crise sanitaire provoquée par la pandémie de Covid19 n’a pas permis de présenter cette révolution au public du Salon International de l’Agriculture et a même mis un coup de frein au projet initial. Le règlement a donc été aménagé suite à l’annonce du report du Salon International de l’Agriculture de Paris en 2022, pour permettre aux établissements de participer à distance.

Le TIEA « nouvelle formule 2021» a donc consisté en 2 épreuves, la première est la rédaction d’un article de presse et la seconde reste une présentation d’un bovin mais sous format vidéo.

Palmarès en « Live »

Le palmarès du trophée 2021 a été annoncé lors d’une cérémonie digitale le jeudi 20 mai 2021 en « live » sur Facebook, dans le cadre de la semaine de l’agriculture française.

Lors de cette cérémonie, Julien Denormandie, Ministre de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation, Jean-luc Poulain, Président du Ceneca et Olivier Alleman, Commissaire Général du CGA ont remis les prix des 3 concours du Concours Général Agricole qui ont pu se dérouler cette année : le Prix d’Excellence des produits, le Concours des Pratiques Agro-Ecologiques et enfin le Trophée International de l’Enseignement Agricole.

Dans la 3^ème section de ce concours, 3 établissements, belges, chinois et argentins, étaient en compétition pour le TIEA du « Meilleur établissement étranger ». Le classement final est le suivant :

– le 1^er prix pour l’établissement argentin « Escuela de educacion Agraria – Goyena » en partenariat avec l’établissement agricole français l’EPL La Roque- Rodez qui prend la 2^ème place de la section 2 « Races allaitantes »,

– le 2^ème prix pour l’établissement chinois « Shandong vocational animal science and veterinary college » dont le lycée partenaire était le LEGTA du Robillard, qui a remporté le 1^er prix dans la section 1 « Races laitières »,

– et le 3^ème prix pour l’établissement belge « IPEA La Reid Institut Provincial d’Enseignement Agronomique » en partenariat avec le lycée agricole Pommerit (CNEAP), qui se place au 15^ème rang dans la section 1 « Races laitières »

Les réseaux Europe et International de l’enseignement agricole français contribuent chaque année à la proposition d’établissements étrangers qui peuvent s’engager comme partenaire aux côtés d’un établissement agricole français.

Une participation née d’une coopération

C’est le cas cette année de l’établissement Chinois « Shandong vocational animal science and veterinary college » avec le LEGTA du Robillard dont la participation jumelée au TIEA 2021 est le fruit d’un long travail soutenu par l’animateur du réseau Chine de l’enseignement agricole français.

En effet, cette collaboration Franco-Chinoise s’inscrit parfaitement dans l’accord cadre « formation professionnelle agricole », signé entre les ministères, qui

souhaite promouvoir les échanges entre étudiants. Aussi, ces dernières années, il a permis à l’EPL du Robillard, un des acteurs phares de la coopération avec la Chine, de cimenter leur engagement avec un partenariat fiable et pérenne.

L’alchimie entre les deux établissements fut tellement bonne l’an passé, que sous leur impulsion les organisateurs du concours ont bien voulu modifier le règlement concernant les langues utilisées dans les épreuves du concours.

Suite à cette participation, l’établissement chinois de Shandong est enthousiaste pour continuer à échanger avec l’EPL du Robillard et espère ardemment pouvoir venir préparer en Normandie l’édition du TIEA 2022.

La Chine est particulièrement sensible à ce type de concours et il ne serait pas étonnant d’avoir plus de participants dans le futur.

Le TNLA, ancienne formule, avait déjà initié la présence de participants étrangers comme pays à l’honneur, mais le concours n’avait jamais reçu autant de candidats étrangers.

Une aventure gagnante

En ce qui concerne les vainqueurs argentins, il s’agissait de leur première participation. L’équipe de l’« Escuela de educacion Agraria » a tenu à participer à la cérémonie en présence du Ministre de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation français, et ce malgré le décalage horaire (il était 4h du matin à Buenos Aires).

L’ambition des animateurs des réseaux géographiques et du Bureau des Relations Européennes et de la Coopération Internationale du MAA est d’accompagner l’internationalisation du TIEA en favorisant des partenariats existants dans l’enseignement agricole et en appuyant l’émergence de nouvelles candidatures étrangères dans les années à venir. Le retour au Salon Internationale de l’Agriculture à Paris en 2022 apportera évidemment un pouvoir d’attraction supplémentaire pour nos partenaires étrangers.
